selfish love

Love without Attachment

As I was reading The Alchemist earlier this year, I took note of this sentence:

“[The shepherd] tried to deal with the concept of love as distinct from possession, and couldn't separate them.”

–Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist (translated by Alan R. Clarke)

In that moment, the shepherd represents mankind’s idea of love. When you think you love someone, it’s hard not to be attached.

But,

Love does not equal possession.

Love is wanting what’s best for someone, even if that means you aren’t in the picture.

When humans love something or someone, they want it for themselves. But that kind of love is selfish, even if it stems from good intentions.

People confuse a lot of things with love. People think they experience love when they’re really just mistaking love for neglected emotions or needs.

To experience love that’s true and selfless, you have to look within.
